Programme of Nigeria Medical Students

To become a medical doctor in Nigeria, one has to complete a 6-year medical program to obtain a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. After completing the program, there is a one-year clinical internship (House Job) that must be completed before being licensed by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to practice medicine. 

In summary, to become a fully licensed medical doctor in Nigeria, one must complete 7 years of uninterrupted training.

Federal Universities in Nigeria and Their Cut-Off Marks for Medicine and Surgery

Each university sets its cut-off mark based on the applications it receives for the course and the average scores of the applicants. The cut-off mark typically experiences slight fluctuations each year.

For admission to study medicine in a federal university, candidates usually need to achieve a JAMB score of at least 300. Candidates that don’t score 300  in their utme need to study rigorously and aim for high marks in their post utme. 

50% 30% 20% admission method

In most federal universities, the cut-off mark is determined by a combination of the candidate’s UTME score, post-UTME score, and O’Level results. The JAMB score contributes 50% to the aggregate mark, the post-UTME score accounts for 30%, and the O’Level results make up the remaining 20%.

University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos Medical School established the Department of Surgery in 1962, with Professor Horatio Oritsejolomi Thoma as its pioneer. Medical students go through training from the school teaching hospital, known as  Lagos University Teaching Hospital (luth)

UNILAG has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. The cut-off mark for the 2023/2024 session was 84.675%. UNILAG used the 50% 30% 20% method for admission cut off marks to any department.

For new medical students, there is an acceptance fee of 20,000 Naira, followed by a school fee of 166,300 Naira. Hostel fees at UNILAG range from 65,000 to 85,000 Naira, depending on the type of hostel.

University of Ibadan (UI)

The University of Ibadan (UI) is a prestigious institution located in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. It is the oldest university in Nigeria and is known for its high academic standards.

The Department of Surgery of the University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital, Ibadan is one of the foundation departments of the University College, Ibadan established in 1948.

University of Ibadan (UI)  has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. The cut-off mark for the 2023/2024 session was 79 on merits and 72.125 for elds. UI used the 50% 30% 20% method for admission cut off mark to any department.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)  has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. The cut-off mark for the 2023/2024 session was aggregated (UTME, post-UTME, and O’levels) 310.5.

For new medical students, there is an acceptance fee of 62,000 Naira, followed by a school fee of 292,500 Naira.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)

UNN Faculty of Medical Sciences and Dentistry offers a six year academic programme toward the M.B., B.S. Professional degree for students admitted by entrance (JME) examination, 5-year programme for students admitted by direct entry. Medical students receive training at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH).

UNN Cut off mark for medicine and surgery

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)  has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. Candidates with a UTME score of 318 have a good chance of gaining admission to UNN’s Medicine and Surgery program if they achieve a high score in the post-UTME exam.

For new medical students, there is an acceptance fee of 30,000 Naira, followed by a school fee of 120,550 Naira.

Bayero University Kano (BUK)

The medical school at Bayero University is the 14th medical school/college established in Nigeria. The program runs for a period of 6 academic sessions including Basic Sciences at 100 level. Medical students undergo training at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. 

For the 2023/2024 admission session, candidates who scored 240 for indigenes and 300 for non-indigenes in UTME, achieved good grades in O’level, and passed the online screening, were admitted to the BUK medical and surgery program.

For new medical students, there is an acceptance fee of 10,000 Naira, followed by a school fee of 230,000 Naira.

Federal University, Lokoja (FULOKOJA)

The Federal University Lokoja was established along with eight (8) other new Federal universities on the 16th of February 2011 following a pronouncement by former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

For the 2023/2024 admission session, candidates who score 250 in UTME, and good grades in O’level were admitted to the FUL medical and surgery program.

UNIBEN School of Medicine is the oldest of the Schools and has always been an integral part of the College since the foundation of the University and has the largest number of Departments. University of Benin (UNIBEN) has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. 

For the 2023/2024 admission session, candidates who score 200 and above in JAMB UTME and choose UNIBEN as their first choice will be eligible to take the school’s post-UTME. Each department then sets its own score, but the cutoff isn’t publicly available.

University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)

The University of Ilorin, also known as Unilorin, is considered one of the top government-owned institutions in Nigeria. It was founded in 1975 and is situated in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara. Additionally, the institution has a university teaching hospital where medical students receive training.

University of Ilorin (Unilorin)  has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. The admission process at UNILORIN will consider an aggregate of UTME/DE score (50%), the Post-UTME screening score (30%), and the grades of five relevant O’ Level subjects (20%). Candidates who score above 300 in JAMB have a chance of being admitted to the Medicine and Surgery program at Unilorin.

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has not yet announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. However, candidates are required to have a score of 260 in JAMB to be eligible for admission to the Medicine and Surgery program at UNICAL. Additionally, they must take part in UNICAL’s POST UTME/SCREENING for consideration for admission.

Usman Dan Fodio University (UDUSOK)

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), also known as UDUSOK, is a public research university located in the city of Sokoto, north western Part of Nigeria. University of Jos (Unijos)  has not announced the cut-off mark for the 2024/2025 period. Candidates must score min of 290 in JAMB and pass mark for post utme to have a chance of admission to the Medicine and Surgery program at UDUSOK.

University of Uyo (UNIUYO)

The federal government established this university in 1991. It was merged with the former University of Cross River State, earlier established in 1983. The university, which is located in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, offers a program in medicine and surgery. Medical students receive training at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.

The university isn’t known to set cut-off marks. Admission is based on the candidate’s performance and NUC quota. UNIUYO has an NUC admission quota of 120 students, as such candidates with the highest UTME scores are considered for merit admission.

For admission to study medicine in a state University, candidates usually need to achieve a JAMB score of at least 250. Candidates that didn’t attain a minimum of 250  in their utme need to study rigorously and aim for high marks in their post utme, or better still have strong O levels

Bowen University

Bowen University is a private university founded by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. On 17 July 2001, the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the establishment of Bowen University, which was subsequently licensed to operate by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Bowen University uses 8 years for their intercalated Medical Program. Graduates will be given two certificates, both Bsc, and MB; BS Program.
