Nigeria currently has over 270 universities spread across federal, state, and private ownership, yet the number of available admission spaces remains far below demand.
Each year, more than 1.8 million candidates sit for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, but less than 45% eventually secure admission into accredited higher institutions.
To address this issue, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council (FEC) have approved the establishment of 24 new universities, both federal and private, in 2025. This move aims to provide more access for students seeking admission.
We have compiled a complete list of the newly approved universities, along with instructions on verifying their accreditation with the National Universities Commission (NUC). This will give you more options when applying for university and help you avoid unapproved institutions operating illegally.

How to Verify Approved University
The NUC is the only body in Nigeria legally empowered to approve universities and accredit their academic programs. Before applying or paying any fees, visit the NUC official portal (www.nuc.edu.ng) to verify if the school is on the approved list.
Studying in an unapproved university is equivalent to wasting four to six years, as such certificates hold no legal or professional value.
Additionally, even when a university is approved, not all its courses may have NUC accreditation. Always confirm that your intended course is fully recognized before enrolling.
An unaccredited course can prevent you from being called to the Nigerian Law School, getting a license from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), or proceeding for mandatory national youth service.
