If you have checked your 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results and are wondering about the cut-off mark for medicine and surgery at several universities.

Programme of Nigeria Medical Students

To become a medical doctor in Nigeria, one has to complete a 6-year medical program to obtain a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree. After completing the program, there is a one-year clinical internship (House Job) that must be completed before being licensed by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to practice medicine.

In summary, to become a fully licensed medical doctor in Nigeria, one must complete 7 years of uninterrupted training.

Each university sets its cut-off mark based on the applications it receives for the course and the average scores of the applicants. The cut-off mark typically experiences slight fluctuations each year.

For admission to study medicine in a federal university, candidates usually need to achieve a JAMB score of at least 300. Candidates that don’t score 300  in their utme need to study rigorously and aim for high marks in their post utme.

50% 30% 20% admission method

In most federal universities, the cut-off mark is determined by a combination of the candidate’s UTME score, post-UTME score, and O’Level results. The JAMB score contributes 50% to the aggregate mark, the post-UTME score accounts for 30%, and the O’Level results make up the remaining 20%.

In Nigeria, some universities accept a JAMB score of 140 for nursing programs, but it’s important to note that students will be required to sit for an entrance exam as part of the admission process.

This article is going to give you a broad explanation of list of schools that accept low cut off marks for nursing, admission requirements for nursing, and the appropriate school, that can accept you, with low JAMB scores

Jamb Subject Combination

First of all, most students make mistakes with the wrong subject combination. Every school of Nursing is now through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME. There are few exceptions though, but there are consequences. The first thing to know is your JAMB combination, and it must be correct

  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE
  • PHYSICS
  • CHEMISTRY
  • BIOLOGY

This is the standard combination for jamb, but this is not a combination for a Nursing school Exam. You will write an entrance exam for every Nursing school, most include mathematics, to the above combinations, and some, even do Orals. But: As far as JAMB is concerned. That combination is the standard

SSCE  Requirement (WAEC/NECO/NABTEB)

You need to meet certain requirements for your Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) – whether it’s WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB. You must earn a credit in English, Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

It’s important to note that you cannot combine results from different exam bodies such as WAEC and NECO. However, you can combine results from the same exam body, for instance, two WAEC results or two NECO results from the same candidate are acceptable.

NABTEB is specifically for Northern and North Central Candidates. If you are from the Southern region (e.g. Anambra, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Delta, Rivers, Abia, etc.), you cannot use NABTEB for any of the Schools of Nursing in the southern region. On the other hand, if you are from the core north, NABTEB is your primary exam.

Most Universities in the South West region are supercompetitive, when it comes to Nursing, your grades matter a lot. So you have to aim higher than just credit, and none of them accept two sittings. Only the school of Nursing accepts two sittings

nurses-smiling-together-hospital-1024x683 Nigeria Universities That Accept Low Cut Off Mark For Nursing

WHAT YOU MUST KNOW

Admission to the School of Nursing is easier than most universities, either state or federal. However, the certification is inferior. If you go through a University education,  you are going to be certified with  BNsc in Nursing, however, for the school of Nursing, you are going to be certified in registered nursing (RN). A registered Nurse is not in the same breadth as a nurse with a Bachelor of Nursing science. However, this does not mean. A school of Nursing Graduate is not competent.

Another important piece of information is to avoid Mushroom School of Nursing, where JAMB score will not be needed. JAMB and NUC have made it mandatory, that every admission should come through them. So when you go to schools like that, just know that you are not qualified, to practice Nursing. School of Nursing does not allow pregnancy. So, if you are planning to study Nursing, you must avoid getting pregnant. Or else, you will be withdrawn

Also, Avoid Studying in Benin Republic. You might  not be able to secure license

CONCLUSION

Nursing is a great course, and it is economically viable. But to get there, needs consistent studying. Even if you attend a private University, you can be withdrawn, if you are not serious, about your study. Nurses are needed all over the world, so you will never regret studying it. Your dreams are valid. Go for it!

The total score for the post-UME is 100 and the general cut-off is 65. The cut-off mark varies and Ilorin indigene is given higher priorities of admission compared to other states (non-indigene)

7 Tips on How to Pass UNILORIN Post UTME

  1. Revise O’Level books
  2. Study with Unilorin Past Questions
  3. Practice with colleague
  4. Aim higher than the required cut off mark
  5. Assess your chances of admission
  6. Manage exam anxiety
  7. Adhere to exam rules and regulations
1. Revise your O’level books

Thorough revision of your O’level textbooks is crucial for success in the UNILORIN Post UTME exam. This will help you refresh your understanding of fundamental concepts and strengthen your grasp of the subjects you’ll be tested on.

2. Study with Unilorin past questions

Past questions are an invaluable resource for familiarizing yourself with the exam format, question types, and marking schemes. Practice answering past questions under timed conditions to simulate the actual exam environment and improve your speed and accuracy. Download UNILORIN Past Questions and Answers

3. Practice with colleague (after you have studied alone)

Once you’ve had a solid foundation from self-study, join a college or tutorial group to engage in collaborative learning and practice. This will expose you to different perspectives, allow you to clarify doubts with peers, and enhance your problem-solving skills.

4. Aim higher than the required cut-off mark

Don’t just aim for the minimum passing mark; strive to score higher. This will give you a competitive edge in the selection process and increase your chances of securing admission into your desired program.

5. Assess your chances of admission

Evaluate your academic performance, UTME score, and the competitiveness of your chosen course to get a realistic understanding of your admission prospects.

It is wiser to select a course for which you have a higher chance of admission, rather than choosing a course for which you may not be admitted, only to end up studying a course that you do not have a passion for over the course of four years.

6. Manage exam anxiety

Anxiety can hinder your performance. Practice relaxation techniques, get adequate sleep, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to cope with exam stress and stay calm during the test.

7. Adhere to exam rules and regulations

Thoroughly review the post-UTME exam guidelines and strictly follow all instructions. Familiarize yourself with the exam format, prohibited items, and penalty measures for any violations.

How to calculate UNILORIN’s Admission Cut-Off Mark?

The admission process at UNILORIN will consider an aggregate of UTME/DE score (50%), the Post-UTME screening score (30%), and the grades of five relevant O’ Level subjects (20%).

JAMB

The maximum score under JAMB is 400. To get 50%, your Jamb score will be divided by 8 (400/8)

WAEC/NECO

O level is calculated using the 5 core subjects (every course requires a specific combination of subjects that candidates must have in order to gain admission to the University).

  • A1 – 6 points
  • B2 – 5 points
  • B3 – 4 points
  • C4 – 3 points
  • C5 – 2 points
  • C6 – 1 points

Your total points is then calculated to 20 through multiplication by 2/3.

Example:

A candidate that have A1 all through her 5 subject O’level score will be calculated as follow;

  • Mathematics = A1
  • English = A1
  • Chemistry = A1
  • Physics = A1
  • Biology = A1

Total = 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6  = 30 points

Then multiply by 2

30 X 2 = 60

Lastly, divide by 3

60/3 = 20%

For Direct entry: Let’s say an aspirant scores 14 points 14×3.125 = 43.75

AGGREGATE (DE) 43.75+41.6 = 85.35
